Future Graduates of IIM Rohtak can leverage on technology and AI to deliver expeditious justice to citizens: Justice Bindal

Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Rohtak inducted the new batches of its two innovative, five-year programmes – Integrated Programme in Law (IPL) and Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) in a two-day induction and orientation programme beginning on 5th August, 2023. Both the programmes are first of its kind among IIMs. IPL students get both BBA and LLB degrees at the end of five years while IPM students get BBA and MBA degrees. The new batch included students from 20 states and UTs. Female students constitute nearly 50% percent of IPM 05 batch and IPL 03 batch.

The distinguished speaker for the first day included Mr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, Managing Director and CEO, Bandhan Bank, Dr. Satya Pal Singh, Hon’ble Member of Parliament and Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Former Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India were the Guests of Honour respectively for the opening ceremony while Hon’ble Mr. Justice Rajesh Bindal, Judge, Supreme Court of India was the Chief Guest for valedictory function.

Prof. Dheeraj Sharma, Director, IIM Rohtak, congratulated the students for making it through the rigorous admission process and welcomed them to the institute. He sensitized the students on their upcoming life at IIM Rohtak by illuminating them about the role of culture and making them aware of its visible and invisible aspects. The visible aspects include physical infrastructure while the invisible aspects consist of the shared values. He reminded the students that the institute’s culture and shared value system formed its essence and exhorted the students to continue the hallowed IIM culture that focuses on immersion in all three types of learning – peer-to-peer learning, self-learning and instructional learning. While concluding his welcome, he reiterated the importance of discipline and judicious use of technology in a student’s life.

The Hon’ble Guest for the opening ceremony, Dr. Satya Pal Singh felicitated the new batch and mentioned the multiple innovative programs pioneered by the current Director, Prof. Dheeraj Sharma. He stated that these programs have made IIM Rohtak the largest IIM in the country and have been replicated by other IIMs. His speech primarily focused on leadership. He highlighted the role of ethics/cosmic consciousness in becoming a great leader. Another key aspect of his speech included the importance of 4 C’s – Confidence, Continuous learning, Communication, and Connectivity in the life of a leader. He ended his speech by praising IIM Rohtak for its focus on all-round development of students through on yoga, spiritual and mental well-being, academic rigor, and research orientation and encouraged the students to make the best of opportunities afforded to them.

Hon’ble Justice Rajesh Bindal, Chief Guest for valedictory function began his address by congratulating the students for their admission in one of the most prestigious institutions of India. He highlighted the specific programs and achievements of IIM Rohtak such as its record-breaking gender diversity and its dedicated program for Kashmiri women students that have made it one of the most innovative institutes of India. He impressed upon the students their good fortune in studying in one of India’s premier institutes and encouraged them to use their time productively by imbibing knowledge from the institute’s world-class faculties. His speech focused on the need to be a life-long learner and the importance of time management. He encouraged IIM Rohtak to conduct research on functioning of courts to reducing quantum of litigation. Justice Bindal also emphasized the importance of learning regional language aside from Hindi and English. Finally, Justice Bindal emphasized the role of judiciary in creating a positive business climate by handling appropriate handling of commercial litigation, arbitration, and leveraging of technology as well as AI.

The Hon’ble Guest of Honour, Dr. Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Former Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission of India focused on the Indian economy in speech. He spoke about the pace at which India’s per capita income is doubling and redoubled on the importance of maintaining a high growth rate. He identified sustainable economic development and use of renewables as focus areas of the economy. He specifically highlighted the need to develop a strategic vision for achieving carbon neutrality by 2070; improve harnessing of solar and wind energy and increase penetration of electric-powered two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Mr. Chandra Shekhar Ghosh, MD and CEO, Bandhan Bank congratulated the new batch on their admission and exhorted them to use their education to improve people’s lives. To achieve the same, he encouraged students to develop empathy for and understanding of the life and problems of the common man. He reiterated that this empathy and understanding will enable them to develop people-oriented solutions and identified the success of Bandhan Bank in becoming one of India’s important financial institutions. He encouraged students to be passionate, hardworking, and remain dedicated to become successful.

As part of the induction program, the faculty of IIM Rohtak also interacted with the students and made them cognizant about the culture, norms and rules of the institute.

The second day of the Induction programme will consist of three panel discussions involving distinguished speakers from the corporate world. The topic for the first panel discussion is: Challenges and opportunities for multinational companies operating in India. The second panel discussion will be on the topic: The world of consulting: Opportunities and Challenges. The third panel discussion will focus on pharmaceutical industry. The topic is: What does it take to make India the pharmacy of the world.
