Education Has to be Futuristic in Technology: Scholars at 4th APETA Summit 2022 in Goa

Goa November 2022 : “We cannot educate our students and youth, if the curriculum is not in sync with the ongoing practices in the industry.” These were the rationale of Sarpreet Singh Gill, Education Secretary to the Government of Goa, emphasized with the above assertion on the synchronization of higher studies with the industry requirements at the 4th edition of the Asia Pacific Education and Technology Awards and Summit 2022 (APETA – 2022).

With the theme of ‘Future Technology in Higher Education – the NEP Perspective’, Education Post organized APETA-2022 on November 25, 2022 in Panjim, Goa. As the chief guest of the summit, Gill further stressed on the urgent need to improve the quality of primary, second and higher secondary schools of the country as they are the ‘building blocks’ of any learning and development colossal. The summit was jointly organized by the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Goa Chambers of Commerce and Industry.

The secretary also awarded 32 universities and colleges for their contribution in various academic categories (Names of the winning institutions attached). The Education Secretary felt delighted that colleges and universities are getting recognition for criteria like: Strong Industry Connect, Developing Entrepreneurs and Leaders in India, Educational Campus and many more. Shiv Shankar Sharma, Founder-cum-Facilitator of Education Post magazine, congratulated the winning institutions and wished them good luck for their future ventures.

Dr. Sanjay B. Chordia, Founder President and Chairperson of Suryadatta Group of Institutions, Pune, delivered the keynote address of the APETA 2022. Dr. Chordia lauded the government to imply the New Education Policy which embodies and manifests the Five Pillars of Education, proposed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Dr. Chordia also emphasized on many imperative issues of higher education prevalent in the country, such as teacher to pupil ratio, learning to transform, abridging the gap between industry and academia, rationale to infuse multidisciplinary education, etc.

Dr. Nasir Jamal, Secretary at the PHD Chamber of Commerce swimmingly moderated the first session of the summit in which he expressed his joy that now, because of the NEP, students would get more experiential learning from their academics. One panelist of the session, Mangirish Raikar, former President of Goa Chambers of Commerce and Industry, mentioned about addressing the plight of ‘school dropout’ among the students in rural and semi-urban parts of India.

President of Goa Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Ralph De Souza shared his elation over the education committee of the Goa Chamber has been constantly working with the school and colleges in Goa. De Souza pointed out the importance of skilling the huge human resource of Indian youth as many countries are facing their demography with an aging population, including neighboring China.

Vishal Khurma, CEO of Woxsen University, Hyderabad prudently moderated the second session of the summit. With his questions to the panelists, he called attention to Gross Enrolment Ratio and access to higher education in the rural and hinterlands of the country.

Along with his several insights, Dr. Ram Karan Singh, Vice-Chancellor of ICFAI University, Dehradun, expressed his optimism about higher education, especially under implementing the New Education Policy. He commented on the ‘awareness of patents’ among common people as there are lots of small instrumental inventions being adopted in the villages of India, but they are not aware of the patent.

Dr. Suresh D S, Chairperson of ISTE Karnataka Section and Director of Channabasaveswara Institute of Technology, Tumkur, enlightened how virtual reality could be really helpful in training the students. Dr. Suresh felt proud to share that how CIT Group Tumkur, an institution willingly established in a Tier-3 city of Karnataka, has been training its non-IT students also via its an arrangement called, “IT for Non-IT.”

Dr. S V Ramana Rao, Director of Siva Sivani Institute of Management, hammered on delivering ‘impactful research’ while not pursuing it only for its sake. Dr. Ramana also talked about the learning management system that his institute has adopted to assess the progress of each student and to bring her/him to a level of excellence, as each student of any class has different levels of cognition and learning ability.

Dr. M. Venu Gopala Rao, Director of St Ann’s Group of Institutions, Andhra Pradesh, stressed on technological training of teachers also as they are the first in line to educate students. He explained it with an example of cyber security which is a heavily demanded skill nowadays. Current teachers, or those in the future, will have to be a learned in cyber security if she/he has to teach students this subject.

In the peroration part of the session, Mr. Khurma deduced a solution of access to higher education by the help of 5G technology and Woxsen University is resolute to get a grip on it.
